Résumé

In early 1990, several major spills released c. 4,000,000 L of oil into a narrow tidal strait that separates New York City from New Jersey. This study examined changes in the foraging patterns of three species of wading birds from nearby breeding colonies and in the populations of small fishes and shrimp eaten by these birds during the nesting season following the spills. Wading birds were more common at two freshwater foraging sites after the spill but less common at two estuarine sites. The directions of foraging flights by three piscivorous species differed between years and were more scattered after the spill. The scatter of flightlines by two non-piscivorous species did not increase after the oil spills. Populations of shrimp and the largest size class of fishes were smaller and more variable after the spills.
